Welcome
Welcome to the Jazz and Blues Site. As a society we intend to have fun. Listen to a lot of great music and make it too.
Look out for us on the first day of the intro fair (in the Riley Smith Hall) and also making music around and about the union during the freshers fortnight. If you’re not sure if this is for you just come and introduce your self to our friendly committee and we will have a chat.
This society is not only for musicians; there is a lot of listening and socialising to do! If you are a musician we are hoping to have a database of players so that as well as our monthly jam sessions we can have small groups forming – and if you’re any good I’ll help you get a gig!
This year we have a lot on the agenda:
Starting with a gig on Monday October 13th. Performing will be Nu York State who did a gig for us last year, which went down a storm. Their Jazz/Latin/Funk fusion is a great mix and really gets your toes tapping. They will be supported by a band yet to be announced and we will have a DJ for the evening so you can make a night of it. Tickets £7 in advance for non members, £5 for members and will be available from us at the intro fair, at our socials – or from Leeds tickets online from 20th September.
We have been out on the streets of Leeds getting our members a lot for their membership money. We have been in discussions with the following for discounts:
- LUU events – we have a confirmed amount off all their gigs and club nights that are Jazz, funk, Latin, soul and motown
- Café Lento (Headingly) – after holding a few gigs there Richard, the owner, has agreed to 10% off for every jazz and blues member – they do fab food and coffee! He has also kindly agreed to sponsor the society.
- The Wardrobe – we have chatted to the manager and he has agreed to some discount (we are just firming the exact terms and conditions etc). This is currently known as the place to go to see up and coming bands and to mix with the best talent.
- JAM records in the St John’s Arcade - have agreed to give our members 10% off everything in store (not just jazz and blues cd’s but all items)
- The Elbow Rooms – have agreed to give us a discount (we are also just firming up the conditions and amount of this) they currently hold a free gig night on a Wednesday and it is a great place to go and play pool!
- Money off our own gig nights, workshops and free jam sessions.
- More to come…….
You get all this and more for just £9 for the year if you attend just 3 of our own events you will have almost paid for your membership!
